Digital transformation is the buzzword across industries, reshaping the world as we know it. We live in a world that is transforming at a rapid rate and this has an impact on households, businesses, and processes.

In education, digital transformation goes beyond integrating technology into the classroom, but also rethinking the teaching and learning processes to meet the demands of the digital generation. This shift from traditional learning has redefined how students learn, educators teach, and institutions operate.

Parents and educators are increasingly leveraging digital tools, platforms, and artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance the learning experience and prepare students for success in the 21st century.

This integration is becoming a part of day-to-day life, as we rely on technological advancements to enhance learning outcomes and improve our abilities to be well-versed in varied skills and competencies. As such, classrooms have evolved into dynamic, interactive learning environments where learning can be inclusive yet personalised to cater to diverse learning styles, preferences, and needs.

The Department of Basic Education in South Africa has embraced digital transformation by rolling out the robotics and coding curriculum, which is still in its pilot phase. This was done as a recognition of the importance of computer literacy and the need to prepare learners for the digital era.

Trends are a big part of the digital culture and even in education, there are trends that we are witnessing and can expect to see in years to come. These include:

Artificial Intelligence

Simply put, AI is a sort of machine learning that uses data and algorithms to learn cognitive functions like problem-solving, decision-making, perception, and language understanding, gradually improving its accuracy over time.

Nano learning

Nano learning or microlearning, is a learning approach of delivering small, bite-sized units of educational content usually on a complex topic in the form of short videos, interactive quizzes, infographics, or text-based content that can be consumed quickly and easily.

Online and hybrid education

Modern students prefer having a choice of how they learn and online learning means that the classroom can be anywhere. In homeschool and hybrid learning, students join lessons virtually through tools like Zoom and Microsoft Teams and access additional material online.

Virtual reality

Virtual reality is like stepping into a whole new world without leaving your chair. It’s a computer-generated environment that makes you feel like you’re there, seeing and interacting with everything around you. Advancements in tech have combined VR with augmented reality (AR) which integrates digital information with the user’s real-life environment, making it more realistic.

Cloud-based learning

Cloud-based learning is an interactive learning experience that enables learners to access their learning materials from their computers and with an internet connection. Using a cloud-based Learning Management System (LMS) learners can access lessons, videos, and assignments from anywhere with an internet connection.

Gamification

This is the concept of incorporating game-like elements into learning to make it more fun and engaging while motivating learning, participation, and retention. The use of gamification in learning has been shown to increase learner motivation and engagement and as a result can lead to increased learning gains. Different elements of games are utilised, like competition, points, rewards, and challenges.

Mobile learning

Also referred to as mLearning, this is a way of accessing educational materials, lessons, and resources using smartphones, tablets, or other portable devices. It’s like taking the classroom with you wherever you go, whether you’re on the bus, in a queue, at home, or anywhere else, you can keep learning on the move.

In a world where change is the only constant, innovation is the compass guiding us through uncharted waters. Optimi embraces digital transformation in learning spaces and when the world went into lockdown because of COVID-19 in 2020, we were there to meet the urgent need for digital migration in learning. Our foresight to offer accessible, cost-effective learning products and services through our unique GuideED Learning™ model and our proprietary learning technology, enables us to be industry leaders.

Digital transformation paves the way for a future where education knows no bounds, empowering individuals to realise their full potential and shape a brighter tomorrow.

When you think of creating the perfect learning or studying environment it is easy for one to want to replicate a classroom space. Although this should not be the case, be creative yet practical with your space by using what you already have.

In homeschooling, it is advisable to personalise the space as best as possible so that it still feels familiar to your child and it’s a space your child is looking forward to learning in. There are no rules on how to do this, and the upside of homeschooling is that you have the freedom to create an environment that works for you and your children.

Things to consider when setting up:

A dedicated study space

It’s important to find a dedicated space for learning, like a study room. When setting up this space, there are factors to consider that can affect our productivity and how effectively we learn. To start, you should have the basics covered, such as a comfortable desk and chair, accessible power supply, reliable internet connection, adequate lighting, and a temperature that’s not too cold or warm.

Organisation is key

Keeping only the things you need in and around your dedicated study space is advisable. It is suggested that you keep your dustbin, stationery, and study materials within reach to help maintain focus. Additionally, using shelves can be an effective way to economise your space.

Create a routine

Establishing a consistent study routine is important when studying or learning from home as it offers a structured framework for learning and you take charge of the workload to cover per session. Dedicate time each day for learning and studying and be disciplined to adhere to a structured schedule that aligns with your natural rhythms. Taking regular breaks to recharge and prevent burnout and sticking to your timetable will foster discipline and accountability.

Minimise distraction

Consider using noise-cancelling curtains or white noise machines to eliminate external disturbances. You can also look into using noise-cancelling headphones to block out distractions and immerse yourself fully in your studies. Be mindful of any potential distractions close by and try to eliminate them. Each time your attention shifts away from the task at hand, you inadvertently add extra information to your working memory.

Take advantage of technology

Remote learning relies heavily on technology, so be ready to use the tools and platforms to navigate lessons and study material. As a 21st century learner, the use of devices such as smart TVs, mobile phones, laptops and computers all form part of our learning journey so take advantage of the latest technological tools to enhance your remote learning experience. You can also explore educational collaborative tools such as Google Workspace or Microsoft Teams to better facilitate group projects and virtual discussions with classmates.

These are a handful of tips that can help you get started on your journey to remote learning whether as a parent of a child who is homeschooled or an adult learner who is learning from home. Incorporate these tips and make them as personalised as possible to not only create a conducive environment but to make it a haven of productivity and learning excellence.

Human Rights Day marks 64 years since the Sharpeville massacre and the day has become synonymous among South Africans as one to commemorate and reflect on the sacrifices made for the attainment of democracy. This day reminds us of our rich tapestry and the strides we have made towards equality.

The rights enshrined by our constitution, encompass the right to life and liberty, freedom of opinion and expression, and the right to education among others. Each South African is entitled to these rights without any form of discrimination.

Let us explore education in South Africa and the responsibilities we must uphold in governing this basic right. Having access to education is fundamental to any progressive nation and has a great influence on societal development. By affording citizens this right, individuals can empower themselves with the knowledge and skills that are essential for personal growth and contributing positively to their communities.

Despite efforts to improve education, South Africans are still grappling with several challenges that hinder the quality of learning. Lack of proper infrastructure, overcrowded classrooms, and a shortage of qualified teachers are obstacles that prevent students from having optimal learning experiences

These inequalities are exacerbated in rural schools more than they are in urban schools. At Optimi, providing accessible learning solutions is what we do. We are passionate about making our offerings user-friendly and easy to understand without training, with clear guidance to keep moving forward.

By making use of a balance of printed and digital products, and the use of technology complimented by offline solutions, Optimi ensures that its offerings are easily available to a wide market, irrespective of location or infrastructure. All this is done while striving to be affordable to the majority of the market as far as possible.

The 21st century calls for a paradigm shift in our approach to learning. As we navigate an era marked by technological advancements and unprecedented challenges, the need for accessible, inclusive and forward-thinking education has never been more critical.

Ours is a story driven by a passion for learning, teaching, and helping you accomplish tomorrow’s educational goals today. We are inspired by people who keep moving forward in life. This Human Rights Day, let us be reminded of the importance of a quality education and your responsibility to exercise this right by seeking out the best. Make Optimi your learning partner on this journey and achieve your NEXT.

About Optimi

In the context of education, IQ or intellectual intelligence is usually measured through academic performance and programs like extra lessons and tutoring can usually be arranged to help improve the results.

Now more than ever we are seeing an increased need for education on how to deal with emotions. Recognising the importance of emotional intelligence or EQ in shaping well-rounded and successful individuals can be rectified in the formative years.

What does EQ look like in children?

EQ is the ability to be smart about your emotions and the emotions of those around you and how to deal with them effectively. Admittedly, this can be tricky in children since they may not always know how to make sense of what they are feeling. Although tricky, it doesn’t mean it is impossible to teach.

Teaching EQ in Early Childhood

The first step is to teach them to name their feelings so that they can build their vocabulary for the emotions they are feeling at that moment. You can do this by asking them if they feel “happy or “sad” or even “frustrated” about events or scenarios in their lives. Validate their feelings and help them unpack what these mean for them.

Using EQ to Empower Kids

Problem-solving and other coping skills are an added benefit of building emotional intelligence. Once you’ve taught your child how to identify the different emotions and why they might be feeling that way, allow them to suggest ways they can work through the emotions. You don’t have to agree with their solutions, but you can help them understand the consequences of how they react. Try to assume the role of a coach more than a problem solver by guiding them to the best-suited solution.

The Benefits of EQ in Children

Teaching children to understand their feelings also helps them better understand the feelings of those around them, and aids in building interpersonal skills. While playing or learning, they possess the ability to empathise with others and navigate social situations that may arise in the classroom or playground, all whilst enhancing their decision-making abilities. Another advantage is that they develop the confidence to express their feelings to others.

Behavioural Challenges Might Make it Challenging

Children with behavioural and learning difficulties may have a harder time picking up on social and emotional cues which can make it more challenging. These aren’t always obvious in earlier years and can develop later in adolescence. Some key tell-tale signs could be that your child can’t maintain lasting friendships due to poor social skills, has disruptive behavioural episodes if they don’t get their way or seems incapable of empathising with others. A way to work around this is to make your kid aware of how their behaviour is hurtful and ask how it would make them feel if it was done to them. Be consistent and patient with them.

Conclusion

Striking a balance between IQ and EQ can provide the necessary transformative approach to the way learning and teaching happen in today’s ever-evolving society.

Empowering Excellence: Women Thriving as Business Analysts
In the ever-evolving landscape of business and technology, women have been breaking barriers and making their mark in key positions. We spoke to Ruandi Schoeman, a Senior Business Analyst at Optimi Group and a shining example of how women are not only excelling but also thriving in traditionally male-dominated fields.
We explore her experiences as she gives insights into how she navigates her career as a business analyst and highlights the challenges she’s faced, the progress she’s witnessed, and her perspectives on the industry’s inclusivity.

Embracing the Multifaceted Role of a Business Analyst
Being a business analyst isn’t just a job; it’s a dynamic role that encompasses various responsibilities. Ruandi describes it as wearing multiple hats: acting as a project manager, requirements gatherer, negotiator, data analyst, and more. A business analyst serves as the bridge connecting business objectives with technical solutions. In her words, “We work with many different people – from operational teams and developers to exco members and service providers.”

The Challenge of Effective Communication
As Brené Brown puts it, “Clear is kind.” Effective communication is a cornerstone of success for any professional, but especially when you deal with multiple stakeholders like in the case of a business analyst. Ruandi admits that getting communication right has been her biggest challenge as she continues in her journey to mastering it over time.

Changing Dynamics in the Tech Industry
The tech industry’s reputation as a male-dominated field has been slowly evolving, and Ruandi’s observations align with this transformation. According to her, the industry is shifting towards a culture that values work ethic and skill over gender. This perspective is heartening and indicative of a more inclusive future, where talent and expertise are recognised and celebrated, irrespective of gender.

A Positive Outlook on Gender Pay Gaps
Although the topic of the gender wage gap is often met with discontentment, Ruandi’s experiences provide some optimism. In her industry, gender pay gaps are not as prevalent. This is a positive reflection of the strides being made towards a fair and equitable workplace, where remuneration is determined by skills, contributions, and experience rather than gender.
Her journey towards honing her craft and becoming a specialist in her field required the power of determination, resilience, and adaptability. As we celebrate women like Ruandi, we’re reminded that diversity fosters innovation and progress, and that women continue to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of business and technology.

Empowering Women to Upskill themselves, Break Stereotypes, and Bridge Gaps
With each passing day, women everywhere are making strides and invaluable contributions to industries despite gender stereotypes that continue to be a drawback for them in progressing in previously male-dominated fields of work. In celebration of Women’s Month, Optimi College is shining the light on such accomplishments as we believe that empowerment begins with investing in your skills set and embracing continuous learning.

Women in tech
Did you know that women hold less than a quarter of tech jobs in South Africa? This means that only 23% of tech jobs are performed by women. In today’s digital era, the tech industry continues to grow and is projected to keep enjoying these upward trends with advancements in robotics, artificial intelligence, big data analytics, cloud computing, and virtual reality (VR). You could be a part of the evolution when you enrol in one of our industry-endorsed IT Academy courses.

Women in business
Women have held their own in the business world, excelling as leaders, entrepreneurs, and innovators.

According to research by Development Economics, women-owned businesses established between 2018 and 2022 were expected to generate R175 billion a year and create approximately 972 000 jobs. These numbers are expected to increase as more women are advancing in their careers to leadership roles and starting their own businesses. If you aspire to be a trailblazer in all things business and commerce, one of our Commerce Academy courses could propel you forward in your aspirations.

Women in occupational health and safety

Although still underrepresented, women have come a long way in turning the tide of occupational health and safety as a man’s line of work. The Polaris market research valued the global industry at roughly R26 billion in 2022, and its revenue is projected to reach about R80 billion by 2032.

At Optimi College, we believe that with the right skills and knowledge all women have the potential to turn their career dreams into reality. Whether you aspire to be an innovative tech professional, an influential business leader, or be instrumental in maintaining occupational health and safety, we offer the skills and knowledge to help you make the boss move in your chosen field.
Together we can create more inclusive and diverse industries that propel women to new heights of success and achievement. Let this Women’s Month pave the way for the incredible women who are breaking stereotypes, upskilling, and bridging gaps in the professional world.

Take the first step toward empowering yourself and taking charge of your tomorrow. Fill in the form below and one of our friendly Educational Planners will assist you in exploring your next course at Optimi College.

Celebrating Women in Leadership: Natasha Sampson is at the Helm of Human Resources and Tshegofatso Moeng is Shattering the Glass Ceiling in Sales.

At Optimi, we believe in an inclusive approach to leadership, and one way we practice this is by affording fair opportunities to those that are deserving. To celebrate Women’s Month, we are shining the spotlight on women within the Optimi family who are making strides in their respective lines of work.

We sat down with our Head of Human Resources at Optimi Group, Natasha Sampson, to find out what she finds challenging in her leadership role as a woman of colour, what lessons and highlights she can share, and what she finds fulfilling in her role.

Reflecting on her career path leading up to her current role as Head of HR, Natasha shares that it took a lot of determination and resilience, but also admits that she was fortunate to have had an incredible support system along the way, affording her opportunities that later opened doors for her to grow in ways beyond her imagination. Here’s how she answered some of the questions:

1. Do you encounter any challenges being a woman of colour in your role of leadership?

“I have certainly been underestimated and undermined as a woman of colour but I decided early on to use that as a teacher and not an inhibitor. I choose to anchor myself to my purpose and that has allowed me to persevere.”

2. Now that’s a winning attitude! Being the head of a department can’t be an easy task; do you experience any resistance when leading men?

“Not at all! It is a privilege to lead a diverse team. We all work towards a common goal and have the same passion to add real value to the businesses we support.”

3. The world demands so much from women. How do you balance your personal and professional responsibilities?

“I find balance by learning to be fully present wherever I am. When I am at work, I give that my complete focus. When I am home with my daughter, I make sure to give her my full attention. I have taken on too much at some stage of my life and it left me feeling depleted and demotivated.”

Although sales is a male-dominated field, Tshego explains that the best part about her job is making positive contributions and challenging the notions about what women can accomplish in a previously male-dominated industry.

1. What would you say are some of the biggest challenges you have faced as a woman in your career leading up to your current role?

“I have faced numerous challenges, from being overlooked for promotions to blatant exclusions solely based on my gender. This has been very uncomfortable to go through, but it is important to never forget your worth during such times.”

2. Do you ever find yourself having to prove your capabilities because you are a woman?

“Yes, this has been a norm for me throughout life and this has been amplified in my career. In the sales environment, it is believed that women often do not possess the same level of expertise as their male counterparts. I’ve had to work smarter and sometimes harder just to demonstrate my skill and knowledge.”

3. What advice would you give the next generation of female leaders?

“Your voice matters, so speak up because you deserve to be heard. Find yourself a mentor and never stop learning but, most importantly, remember that authenticity is your superpower.”

We proudly celebrate our women in leadership. Both Natasha and Tshego have a wealth of experience in their respective fields and are ready to pass the baton of skills and knowledge to other young aspiring leaders through their mentoring and leadership.
